The short answer
New starters should be able to sign in and work on their first morning, with their account, licence, groups, shared folders and laptop ready beforehand. Give WaTo Consulting a name, role and start date and the Adelaide team builds access by role, prepares the device and helps on day one with multi-factor login and phone setup.
What does new employee IT setup involve?
Before a new person starts, we create their account, assign the right licence, add them to the correct mail groups, Teams and shared folders, and set up their laptop and phone with the software their role uses. On day one they sign in, set up their multi-factor login and get to work, instead of spending the morning waiting on passwords.
What WaTo can help with
Account setup
Create email, cloud access and the accounts the role actually needs.
Device readiness
Prepare laptops, phones and approved software before the employee arrives.
Access by role
Give access based on the job, not a copy of somebody else's permissions.
Simple handover
Provide the employee with a clean, usable starting setup and support path.
Who it is for
- A growing business that hires a few people a year and does each setup from scratch
- An office manager who has been copying an existing staff member's access because there was no list
- A business with seasonal or casual staff who need access quickly and removed just as quickly
- A practice where new starters need access to client software as well as email and files
How it works
- You tell us who is starting and in what role. A start date, a job title and a manager's name is enough for us to know which groups and software apply.
- We build the accounts. Email, licences, group memberships, shared folders and access to any line-of-business apps are set up for that role.
- We prepare the device. A laptop is set up with updates, security software and the right apps, and sent out or delivered ready to sign in.
- We help on the first day. The new starter sets up multi-factor login and their phone with us, and we check that everything they need opens.
Why WaTo for new employee IT setup
- We build a role checklist the first time, which makes every hire after that faster and more consistent
- Access is given by role, which also makes removing it cleanly easier when someone leaves
- New laptops can often be enrolled with Intune or Autopilot so setup is consistent every time
- A real person helps the new starter on day one rather than leaving them with a printed sheet
New employee IT setup questions
How much notice do you need before a new employee starts?
A week is comfortable, especially if a new laptop has to be ordered. If the device is already on hand, accounts can usually be ready within a day or two. Tell us as early as you can and we will work back from the start date.
Can you also handle staff when they leave?
Yes. Offboarding is the other half of the job. We disable the account, keep or forward their mail, move their files to the right person and remove access to every system on the role checklist.
Should new staff get a new laptop or a hand-me-down?
A reused laptop is fine if it is in good condition and gets wiped and set up fresh. Passing one on with the last person's profile still on it is how files and access end up in the wrong hands, so we always reset it first.
